The Gayet Stone

The masonry of the Calvary contained a part of the ancient "Gaët stone" (a Walloon word meaning "bull"). The other part was used as a small bridge crossing over a brook. It is a compact type of schist combined with sandstone and containing tiny ferruginous cubes. This stone used to stand in the center of the village, under the shade of old linden trees. It was used to sacrifice bulls to diverse gods. The display was sometimes cruel: the last to arrive at the Grand council was torn in quarters by four bulls. Another, more pleasant function: any foreigner arriving at Tillet was offered a pitcher of milk that had to be swallowed in one gulp, hoisted on the dolmen. (Middle Ages).
