Porcheresse clog museum

The decline of the Ardennes’ mining and metallurgy industries and the desire for many young French men to escape conscription into the Emperor Napoleon’s armies led to the growth of clog-making in Porcheresse in the early nineteenth century. Of the 4,600 cubic metres of beech timber cut for clog-making, 400 cubic metres was sent to Porcheresse alone. It was the third-largest clog-making centre in Europe. The museum shows visitors the different steps of the clog-making process and a collection of local and foreign clogs.
